Undeserving Drover

So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do” (Luke 17:10)

Drover shivered. His allergy caused his skin to itch, and it had also caused him to lose much of his fur. He was sick and miserable. Then there was Eliezer, the new kitten who didn’t seem to realize that cats are supposed to fear dogs. He entertained himself with Drover’s tail and even curled up on Drover’s back at nap time. How can you chase a cat up a tree when he’s sitting on your back? Drover’s life had certainly taken a downward turn.

But now, as Drover huddled in the cold of night, he heard Eliezer’s cheerful purring. The kitten bounded lightly onto Drover’s back and curled up to spend the night with his big new friend. In spite of himself, Drover found Eliezer’s warmth comforting.

It seems to me that cat-chasing Drover did not deserve to be comforted by a feline in his hour of need. But how much have I received that I did not deserve? I didn’t earn the right to be born into a godly home. I didn’t do anything to merit my parents’ love and care. I am blessed with a good wife in spite of making some careless choices when I was young. Aside from the grace of God, I was helpless to receive forgiveness for my sins, yet Jesus shed His precious blood for me. It is beyond my understanding that I should be a fellow heir with Jesus, yet God has declared me His son by adoption. He has promised me a home in heaven if I am faithful.

My blessings are too numerous to list here, and I am not worthy of any of them. All things considered, I am more undeserving than my dog.

If you would find a humbling way
To face the dawn of each new day:
Just ponder how the Lord has blessed
In spite of our unworthiness.
