“For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:9)

I was working in the garden shed one April morning. Rays of sunshine slanted through the clear glass of the roof window overhead. The door was open, and spring drifted in on fragrant wings. Suddenly the peace was shattered by a tiny roar. It was the distinct sound of a bumblebee. On almost any other morning, Mr. Bee would have stopped to chew a couple of holes in the wooden structure, but not this morning. He had places to go and things to do. However, as he dove through the door of the shed, his little bee eyes were instantly attracted to the lighted roof window above and the inviting blue sky beyond. At full throttle, he shot for the heavens.

He never saw it coming. He hit the glass full force. Pain exploded in his tiny brain. Most frustrating, he didn’t know what he had hit. He could not discover what had arrested his rapid ascent in such an abrupt and undignified manner.

Sometimes frustrations we neither foresee nor understand seem to block our progress. When we hit God’s obstructions, we tend to bumble up and down in confusion just like Mr. Bee. Determined and impatient, we repeatedly bump against God’s will for us.

I had placed the window in the roof for a purpose far beyond Mr. Bee’s power to comprehend. In the same way, the obstructions in our path may serve a purpose of God far beyond what our little minds can comprehend. As we make our plans each morning, let us allow room in our schedules for God’s obstructions. What seems a senseless frustration to us may serve a profound and worthy purpose.

I sing thro’ the shade and the sunshine,
I’ll trust Him whatever befall;
I sing, for I cannot be silent:
My Father planned it all.
