What the Bible says about homosexuality

The Bible is the Word of God and reveals God’s will. So, it is important for us to consider what the Bible says about this subject.

In the first chapter of the Bible, we read that God created man and woman, male and female, and He made them sexual beings.

So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” (Genesis 1:27-28 )[i]

This scripture also shows that God created sexuality for the propagation of the human family.

The Bible shows us that marriage is to be a close, intimate oneness shared between a man and woman. He uses the term one flesh to describe it.

And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE,’ and said, ‘FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH’ ? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.” (Matthew 19:4-6)

The Bible compares marriage to the living bond between Jesus Christ and the church, His bride.

Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. “FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH.” This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. (Ephesians 5:22-33)

Notice the conclusion of this description:  This is a great mystery . . . Marriage is not man’s invention; it is God’s! Note the description of the first marriage in the Bible.

And the LORD God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.” … And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. And Adam said: “This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.” Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed. (Genesis 2:18, 21-25)

From both the Old and New Testament, we can see that God created marriage as the only place in which human sexuality is to be shared. Human sexuality is far more than a mere physical experience. It includes the very deepest of emotional joy, pleasure, and bond. It has the ability to draw the souls of husband and wife so close that nothing but death can separate them. In fact, the Bible tells us that God joins together those who are married.

So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.” (Matthew 19:6)

Let’s look further into the subject of homosexuality and discuss some questions people are asking. When using the term homosexuality, I am including lesbianism, since we are speaking of sexual activity between those of the same sex.

  1. Wow, I wasn’t expecting this, “Homosexuality” discussion. I saw “83 FOR TRUTH” on a billboard in my city and was curious of what the site was about.

I will just say, if we are believers in the Bible and all it’s teachings, it tells what God calls sin. He says whoever have sin in their lives will not enter the Kingdom.

God loves all of us and He desires for all of us to be saved, but we know that won’t be the case because of the choices we make that goes against Him. It matters not how we feel are what we think.

Our only safeguard is to study the scriptures and govern our lives by them. It takes more than believing in God. We have to be obedient as well.

We must remember too, Satan is real and he is trying to get everyone he can to be lost. Whenever we go against God and His instructions, we’re giving our allegiance to Satan. There is only two sides.

Folk can debate until the end of time, but God will have the final say. We are told to love all people but that doesn’t mean we have to love what they do. Romans 12:18

Here are a few scriptures that may shed a little light on the topic above.

    Leviticus 18:22
    Leviticus 20:13
    1 Corinthian 6:9-10
    1 Timothy 1:10
    Revelation 21:8

    1. Asexuality is the lack of sexual desire towards others. Paul in 1 Cor 7:7-17 gives a comparison of singleness and marriage. Asexuality is not a license to sin nor to go against the precepts that Christ taught. Mark 10:6 states, “But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.” A believers desire should be to please God, keep His commands, and treat others as you desire to be treated.

  2. First of all, your incorrect and your information is incorrect. In the original text of Leviticus 18:22 it translates to “man shall not lie with young boys as he does with a women, for it is an abomination”. I will leave my source below, since you’re using the bible. This site is obviously full of anti-LGBTQIA propaganda. If you hate gays, and not pedophiles just say that. I’ll also point out that the bible also says in Leviticus 11:1-47 “ And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying to them, “Speak to the people of Israel, saying, These are the living things that you may eat among all the animals that are on the earth. Whatever parts the hoof and is cloven-footed and chews the cud, among the animals, you may eat. Nevertheless, among those that chew the cud or part the hoof, you shall not eat these: The camel, because it chews the cud but does not part the hoof, is unclean to you. And the rock badger, because it chews the cud but does not part the hoof, is unclean to you.” Also Leviticus 11:7-8, “ And the pig, because it parts the hoof and is cloven-footed but does not chew the cud, is unclean to you. You shall not eat any of their flesh, and you shall not touch their carcasses; they are unclean to you.” So, if you eat pork, or crustaceans, you’re also “going against” the bible and therefore God. Take your hate and [redacted].

    1. Thanks for commenting, Shayna. Something tells me you are not interested in a constructive discussion, but I’ll just make a couple of points here by way of clarification.

As Christians, we do not follow the Old Testament law, which is the portion of the Bible you are quoting from. We are followers of Jesus, and we follow the teaching of Jesus in the New Testament which superseded and fulfilled the Old Testament law. We still value the Old Testament as history and as prophecy and as scripture that reveals who God is, but we do not attempt to keep the Levitical or Mosaic Laws which you are quoting here.

As far as the dietary laws, they were explicitly superseded in the teachings of Jesus and the disciples. See the following passages.

Mar 7:14 Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen to me, everyone, and understand this.
Mar 7:15 Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them.”
Mar 7:17 After he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about this parable.
Mar 7:18 “Are you so dull?” he asked. “Don’t you see that nothing that enters a person from the outside can defile them?
Mar 7:19 For it doesn’t go into their heart but into their stomach, and then out of the body.” (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods clean.)
Mar 7:20 He went on: “What comes out of a person is what defiles them.
Mar 7:21 For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come–sexual immorality, theft, murder,
Mar 7:22 adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly.
Mar 7:23 All these evils come from inside and defile a person.”

Act 10:9 About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray.
Act 10:10 He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance.
Act 10:11 He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners.
Act 10:12 It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles and birds.
Act 10:13 Then a voice told him, “Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.”
Act 10:14 “Surely not, Lord!” Peter replied. “I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.”
Act 10:15 The voice spoke to him a second time, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.”
Act 10:16 This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven.

There are other verses that could be quoted to demonstrate the nullification of the Levitical dietary laws in the New Testament. Here is a passage explicitly teaching that for followers of Jesus, there is a New Covenant that supersedes the Old Covenant in Leviticus.

Heb 8:6 But in fact the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on better promises.
Heb 8:7 For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another.
Heb 8:8 But God found fault with the people and said: “The days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah.
Heb 8:9 It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they did not remain faithful to my covenant, and I turned away from them, declares the Lord.
Heb 8:10 This is the covenant I will establish with the people of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.
Heb 8:11 No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest.
Heb 8:12 For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”
Heb 8:13 By calling this covenant “new,” he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and outdated will soon disappear.

Now, if we do not practice the obligations of the Old Levitical Covenant, why then do we still believe that homosexuality and pedophilia, and other forms of sexual immorality are contrary to God’s teaching? Well, simply because those teachings are clearly repeated and taught in the New Testament. Here are some passages.

Rom 1:26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones.
Rom 1:27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.
Rom 1:28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done.

1Co 6:9 Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men
1Co 6:10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
1Co 6:11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Those verses may seem harsh, but they are telling a hard truth about behavior that destroys the people who practice it. And the promise of Christianity of a relentless redemption that seeks to heal, renew, and restore anyone who desires it. That is the promise of verse 11 above, and that is the message that we want to communicate. Not that we sinners are horrible unredeemable people, but just the opposite, that all us sinners have hope of redemption and renewal and healing.

  3. I am a married lesbian and we have two children. The God my family worships and loves created us as we are and loves us. I do not agree with you. God bless.

    1. The Creator God loves you as much as He loves me or anyone else. He loves all of us as we are. But he calls all of us to repent because He loves us too much to leave us as we are. He lovingly calls us to Himself and to that life of joy that can be found only in the Kingdom of Heaven. He invites all of us to be a part of His Kingdom—an eternal kingdom that begins here and now. What is much more important than whether you agree with me (or us), is whether you and I agree with God. May we strive to agree with Him, because He is God, the God of the whole universe!

    1. Well, ok. But of course, insult and mockery are the lowest forms of discourse and worse than useless. If you would like to have a serious dialogue on what ideas are true and what ideas are false, and how we ought to live, that is what we are here for.
