There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. Proverbs 14:12
The Yungas Road between La Paz and Coroico, Bolivia, is 38 miles of spectacular scenery combined with heart-chilling terror. Barely wide enough for two vehicles to pass each other, this narrow gravel road threads its way through the Andes Mountains, attaining elevations of over 15,000 feet. With sheer roadside drop-offs of more than 2,000 feet and no guardrails of any kind, this hazardous road claims the lives of 200 to 300 travelers each year. It has appropriately been named “The Road of Death” and is considered the most dangerous road in the world.
However, there is a broad, heavily traveled road that claims far more victims each year. The appeal of this road is strong because of the many pleasures, interesting sights, and exciting experiences along the path. Those who travel this highway seem oblivious to its dangerous drop-offs, as well as that its ultimate destination is an enormous lake of fire.
There are many warning signs and numerous exit ramps along the way, but few travelers pay much attention to these. Expensive tolls are frequent, always payable in concessions, compromises, and sacrifices that far exceed any monetary value.
A few travelers manage to escape to the only other spiritual road in existence, one that is narrow, quite rough in spots, and uphill for much of its length. Considerable effort is required to complete its transit, but abundant assistance is available from fellow travelers and from the One who built the road. The destination is so vastly different from the other destination that this highway is usually called “The Road of Life.”
Which road are you on?
Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat. Matthew 7:13
