But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul. Deuteronomy 4:29
When our family lived in southern Colorado almost forty years ago, an unusual incident occurred that created quite a sensation. The face of Jesus was said to be visible in the weathered boards of an old country barn. Throngs journeyed from afar to witness this spectacle, but many were disappointed. All they could see was old barn boards. Those who claimed to see the apparition, however, suggested that the others’ failure to see it was due to a lack of faith.
Sensationalism is still promoted in the name of religion today. Rock concerts advertise Christian music. They lure the faithful and seekers to come and worship Jesus to the accompaniment of raucous music. Feet tap, hands clap, and voices shout, but hearts are left untouched. It is an empty substitute for the real thing.
Enormous buses emblazoned with the names of various ministries travel from state to state. If one wants to be successful and popular as a Christian, he certainly can’t afford to miss their dramatic presentation of the newest philosophy or meditation method. The mind is stimulated and false hopes are generated, yet once again the heart is untouched and unchanged. It is another empty substitute.
Two men in shining garments greeted the women at the empty tomb. “Why seek ye the living among the dead?” they asked (Luke 24:5). That question still bears serious consideration today. The Word of God, His church, and fervent prayer are avenues established by our Lord Himself to lead us into truth. The road of deliverance from the power of sin is never smooth and easy. There really is no substitute for brokenness, repentance, and a life of holiness.
If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. Matthew 16:24
