Satan: Our Greatest Enemy

June 23, 2020

Good Morning Fellow Travelers,

Read: Luke 10:17-24

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.”(1 Peter 5:8)

We often get into trouble when we expose the devil. He resists being exposed! The devil has the power to express his displeasure by increasing attacks and temptations toward us. But he must be exposed, because if we do not understand the way the devil works, we tend to become naive and more open to his attacks.

Reading Revelation 12 will help us see the devil for who he really is. Who is this foe? Verse 9 says he is the great dragon, that old serpent, called the Devil and Satan. The object of his rage is humanity, represented as a woman clothed with the sun. The woman gives birth to a son (Christ) who is to rule all nations with a rod of iron. Failing to devour the child and his mother, Satan wages war with the rest of her children who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. Why should he select these people as the object of his attack? It is because he hates Christians, since they are redeemed by the blood of Christ.

Who is this demon called Satan?
1) He is a personal foe present in our world today.

He has a distinct personality with a will, a plan, and a purpose of his own. He is a spirit and the father of all liars. All evil in the world can be traced to him, and he is behind every temptation we face.

2) He is an old and daring foe.

1 John 3:8 says, “The Devil sinneth from the beginning.” He is the first sinner and deceives the whole world. He has been counter-plotting the work of God since the world was created. Satan is the enemy we battle in the Christian walk of life. Here in Revelation 12, he fought Michael and his angels. Satan carefully picks out his targets. When a man stands up for Jesus, Satan desires to attack him. It is a great achievement for Satan to bring down people in positions of influence as the effects of the attack will likely be greater.

3) He is an angry and crafty foe.

This is because his time on earth is short. Revelation 12:12 says, “The end is near at hand.” Causing us to worry and fear is one of the many strategies Satan uses as he tries to destroy us. Satan has set up strongholds in places like Hollywood. His followers fill themselves with filth in theaters and on computers. Pornography is just one of his many traps.

4) Lastly, he is a limited foe.

God has limited Satan’s time on earth. Satan has much force and power, but he is no match for the mighty power of our Savior God. Let’s rejoice in the fact that Satan is defeated by the blood of the Lamb, Jesus. Satan must flee when we resist him in the all-powerful name of our Savior, Jesus Christ!
