Despising the Spirit

July 24, 2018

Good Morning Fellow Travelers,

Read: Hebrews 10:19 – 39

“Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?” Hebrews 10:29

When we despise the Holy Spirit, we despise the grace of God.  We despise the very outstretched hand of God.  We despise the very Spirit of God that He has sent to draw us to Himself.  To speak against the Son, Jesus Christ, can be forgiven, but to blaspheme the Holy Spirit, that shall not be forgiven (Luke 12:8-10).  Do not despise the Spirit.

Years ago, my father shared a story with us boys that I have not forgotten.  There was a young man in a family he knew of, who resisted the call of God persistently.  His parents encouraged him to come to Christ and find forgiveness for his sin.  He continued on in rebellion against God.

One day as he and his father were working together, his father reminded him again to give in to the Holy Spirit’s prompting.  In anger, the young man demanded, “I don’t ever want to hear that name again.”  Later, as they sat down to lunch, the clock began to chime.  When it had finished chiming the young man started up out of his chair.  “That clock chimed 13 times,” he gasped in horror.  He went out.

Later that day the parents received the sad news that their son had taken a comer too fast in a car and had not survived the crash.  “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Heb. 10:31).

Let’s not despise the Spirit and His promptings.  Let’s not sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth.

We have so much to be thankful for in Christ’s redemptive work.  Do not tamper with your eternal destiny.

    1. The Word of God does make a difference, as seen in these Scriptures in Mark 3 and Luke 12.

Mark 3:28 Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme:
29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation.

Luke 12:10 And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven.
