Finding Scriptural Church Fellowship

Finding a Scriptural Church Fellowship

Many Christians in America and other Western countries are dissatisfied and disillusioned with a watered-down version of Christianity. They are looking for fellowship with Christians who stand by historic Christian doctrines and take Jesus’ commands seriously. One of the main questions these seekers ask is, “Where do I find fellowship?” Many years ago, I faced this same question, and I found there are no easy answers. I made a lot of mistakes along the way, but I also learned a lot, both from experience and from observing and listening to others. I can’t tell you what church you should join, but I can pass on some of the lessons I learned. By the end of…

What Are You Living For?

What Are You Living For

Joe Andrews, now middle-aged, was stopped short one day by the thought, Suppose I got everything I wanted—a better job, a new house, and more leisure time—would I be really satisfied? His honest answer was “No.” For many at middle age, bright hopes and dreams of youth grow dim. Defenses and pretenses begin to crumble. And a horrible, hollow emptiness remains. Life has lost meaning for many young people also. Suicides by teenagers and college students are all-too common. Life without God has no meaning. Years ago wise King Solomon wrote a book. His writings portray the pain and emptiness of life when God is left out. Solomon had walked many paths. He had drunk…

Good News! Freedom!

Good News! Freedom

Jim Wolf (not his real name) spent more than seven years behind bars. But he spent more years than that in the bondage of sin. As a youth, Jim spent much of his time on the street selling drugs, breaking into people’s houses, stealing, lying, cheating. Those years brought a harvest of trouble. Fights. The law. Jail. Jim’s last crime landed him a sentence of over 50 years in a state prison. By this time he was going by an alias, but in prison he was merely a number. A human failure. Socially, morally, and spiritually bankrupt. In prison Jim finally hit bottom, and finally at the bottom, he met God. He genuinely repented of…

What Jesus Did for Me

When we begin to understand and accept what Jesus Christ has done for us, we will be moved to love Him, to obey Him, to honor Him, to please Him, and to praise Him. Let’s consider a few of the things He has done for us. 1. Jesus became poor . . . Ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich (2 Corinthians 8:9). . . . that in Him I can become spiritually rich.

The Matchless Pearl

A HEAVY SPLASH was followed by many ripples, and then the water below the pier was still. An American crouched on the low Indian pier, his eyes riveted on the place where a stream of little bubbles rose to the surface from deep under the water. In a moment a black head appeared and a pair of bright eyes looked up. Then the old Indian pearl diver was clambering onto the dock, grinning and shaking the water from his shining, oily body. “As nice a dive as I’ve ever seen, Rambhau!” cried David Morse, the American missionary. “Look at this one, sahib,” said Rambhau, taking a big oyster from between his teeth. “I think it’ll…

Should I Participate in War?

We live in a world of ever-increasing violence and insecurity. Governments constantly work for agreements, peace, and globalization, but wars and armed conflicts continue to increase. This does not surprise Bible-reading Christians, for Jesus said, “When ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars, be ye not troubled: for such things must needs be” (Mark 13:7). How should we Christians, who follow the Prince of Peace, relate to war? Should we participate in the military actions of the countries where we live? To answer these questions, we must go to the Bible, particularly the New Testament. In the Old Testament, the earthly nation of Israel was God’s people, and He commanded them at times…

Jesus Christ is Coming

Jesus Christ is coming again. The Bible says so. But why is He coming? What will He do when He comes? Why should His coming be important to me or you? To help answer those questions, let’s review why He came the first time. Why Did Jesus Come the First Time? Jesus said about Himself, “The Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10). God created us. Each of us has sinned and become guilty before God. We deserve eternal punishment. God, however, loves us and wants to save us from that punishment. He sent His Son Jesus to die as a sacrifice for our sins so…

The Simple Facts

The Simple Facts

The Simple Facts No one can be saved unless he is born again by the power of God’s Spirit. Christ says, “Ye must be born again” (John 3:7). The necessity is absolute—you must be born again. Performing religious rites will not take the place of the new birth. Baptism will not take the place of the new birth. Confirmation will not take the place of the new birth. Nothing will take the place of the new birth.

Peace and Pardon from the Bible

Peace and Pardon From the Bible

Peace and Pardon From the Bible Thousands of honest individuals are battling a guilt complex and also searching for satisfying answers to life. Perhaps these selected passages of Scripture can help you understand guilt and God’s provision for it. He offers release from guilt and peace of mind. But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked. —Isaiah 57:20, 21 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. —Isaiah…

Loneliness is God’s Knock

Loneliness Is Gods Knock

Loneliness Is God’s Knock Yesterday, for one long moment, I had a preview of eternity without God’s love. In that moment, a feeling of intense loneliness came over me as though light had been taken from the world. I seemed to be wandering aimlessly and uncertainly in heavy darkness without direction. An unexplainable fear began to trouble my mind. In desperation I tried to reason away the fear, only to find that my powers of reasoning seemed to elude me. I tried to draw some calm from my spiritual reserve, only to find the reserve in a state of bankruptcy. I felt inadequate, alone, desperate.

You may do as you please

You May do as you Please

YOU MAY DO AS YOU PLEASE with God now. It is permitted. God placed Himself in men’s hands when He sent Jesus Christ into the world as perfect God and perfect Man in one Being. He was then in man’s hands. They cursed Him. It was permitted. Men spit on Him. God allowed it. They called him a devil. God withheld His wrath. Finally men arrested Him, gave Him a mock trial, flogged Him, nailed Him on a cross, and hung Him between earth and heaven; and God allowed it.

The Good News! God loves you, and wants you to know and love Him. He offers you peace and joy and a fulfilled life. Born Again

Born-Again

Born Again – What does it mean? To become a Christian It’s common to read or hear about people who claim to be “born again” Christians. But I wonder if most people understand what being born again involves. I’d like to explain. The Bible is really quite clear about what is required to become a Christian. One doesn’t become a Christian by attending church, by living a good moral life, by being raised in a Christian home, or by believing what the Bible says about Jesus Christ. The only way to become a Christian is by entering into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ by being born again.

It Doesn’t Matter… Or Does It?

“IT DOESN’T MATTER what you believe, as long as you are sincere.” That’s what a plumbing salesman told me one day—and so many people have said the same thing that it is almost a proverb. We put a premium on sincerity, because it’s so rare in this age of sham. We all admire the sincere man, but we despise hypocrisy. We have great respect for a man so sincerely earnest in his convictions that he is willing to die for them. But is sincerity enough?

Headed the Wrong Way

Is the route you are traveling taking you away from God? If so, it’s time to make a U-turn. God asks you to repent—to do an about-face. If you don’t, the consequences will be disastrous. God calls us to repent. God says that unless you repent you will perish (Luke 13:3). No one can have peace with God unless he repents, for repentance is ending our resistance and surrendering to His will. God commands men to “repent … and believe the gospel” (Mark 1:15). Paul preached “repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ” (Acts 20:21). God commands all men everywhere to repent of their sin (Acts 17:30). Sin is refusing God His…

God’s Stop Signs

Life, like traffic on a city beltway, runs on and on. For a few hours each night, it slows. But most of the time it goes ahead full tilt. Some people get in the wrong lane and go where they don’t want to go. Others are totally lost. Accidents are frequent. Hectic is normal. But life is really unlike traffic on a city beltway. When cars crash, they may be trashed and replaced. But life is made up of PEOPLE, like you. You have only one life. It cannot be replaced or recycled.

Confession and Forgiveness

Do you ever wonder how you can be forgiven of your sins? Forgiven so completely that you are no longer guilty? God tells us how. 1. Confession is necessary if we wish God’s forgiveness. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and for-saketh them shall have mercy” (Proverbs 28:13). “I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin” (Psalm 32:5).

Can God Help Me?

Certainly He Can Do you sometimes feel God doesn’t care about you? Did you know that God really DOES care about your life, your health, your finances, your relationships, and your inner struggles? But even more, He loves you and cares about your soul. He wants to make Himself known to you through His Son Jesus. He wants you to experience the peace of repentance and total surrender to Him, the assurance of your sins forgiven, and the freedom of a righteous life.

Guilty or Forgiven?

Guilty or Forgiven

GUILTY –or– FORGIVEN? “How do you plead?” the judge asked. I swallowed. I hadn’t realized how difficult this would be. “Guilty,” I answered. I would have liked to explain, to say that I am usually very law-abiding, to show how circumstances were different this time. But I knew the judge had probably heard every excuse there was. Mine would be no different. So I quietly accepted the sentence and paid my fine. * * * * * Guilty. We have all felt guilty at one time or another. More than that, we have all been guilty. What is guilt? What is this thing called guilt, anyway?

Is There A Right Way?

Is There A Right Way

WHEN THERE ARE SO MANY RELIGIONS and so many churches all claiming to be right, how can a person know the right way to heaven? This is an old question, and millions are still asking it. Many preachers and religious leaders step forward boldly with their opinions. But eternity is too serious a matter to trust to opinions. A long time ago, a man asked this same question. “How can we know the way?” he asked. The answer was given by Jesus Christ: “I AM THE WAY, . . . no man cometh unto the Father but by me.” Although there are many theories and opinions about the way to heaven, they can all be…

I’m Not So Bad!

I'm Not So Bad!

“I’ve never done anything so bad. I never harmed anyone. I’ve always lived a clean life. God won’t condemn me to everlasting punishment because of anything I’ve done.” So runs the common reply of many who are urged to come to Jesus Christ for salvation and eternal life. If you had committed murder and would come before the court to receive your sentence, you could hardly plead like this: “I have never stolen anything from anybody. I have always been kind to others except in this one instance. I’ve always lived a clean moral life and the court should be lenient with me because this is my only crime.” You know that plea would be…

Heaven: how do you expect to get there?

Heaven how do you expect to get there

Is this your answer? When I meet St. Peter at the gate, I hope I will be good enough. God says: For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast. Ephesians 2:8, 9. Are you saying? All roads lead to the same place. You’re taking the road taught by your church and I the one taught by mine. We’ll all arrive at the same destination. But God says: There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. Proverbs 14:12. Jesus saith unto him, I am the way.…

Can I Find Peace With God? Here’s How!

Can I Find Peace With God?

Two healthy, clean-cut young men, Dr. Westman and Jack Strong, met while flying westward across the nation and became fast friends when they found they were graduates of the same university. After an interesting conversation about their school, a serious discussion arose. It all began when the doctor, after a pause in the conversation, asked, “Where are you headed, Jack?” “I’m going to the West Coast to join my uncle in business,” Jack answered. The doctor paused thoughtfully, and then asked, “Would you mind my asking you a few questions concerning yourself, Jack?”
